So when I post a reply to a thread it just disappears it doesn't appear to append to the thread.

When you post, you are actually saving your post to your own PDS. The post then needs to be picked up by the relay and sent over the firehose, which the forum is subscribed to in order to build its database. 

I eventually want to add SSE or dual-writes to address this.

For now, a refresh usually does the trick. 🙂
